New Side Impact Barrier Shell Model released
The Oasys LS-DYNA Environment launch a new Side Impact Barrier Shell Model for the China NCAP Protocol.
Arup and Oasys Ltd. have a proven track record of over 20 years of experience in barrier development using proven modelling techniques that demonstrate robustness and fidelity, including our collaboration with Cellbond.
These models have been developed to take advantage of the latest developments in the LS-DYNA code and are designed to provide robust and efficient analysis.
The specifications for the newest deformable impact barrier: SC-MDB C-NCAP, has been taken from the China-NCAP document ‘C-NCAP Management Rules (2024 edition). The SC-MDB barrier is used in the 2024 China New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP) in their Side Impact Testing Protocol.
The six honeycomb blocks have been validated in compliance to C-NCAP SC-MDB specifications.
The LS-DYNA model calibration has been done using the simulation results for a 40kph dynamic impact against a rigid wall. The test involves the barrier on a trolley impacting a rigid wall. The force-deflection curves, generated from the model’s analyses have been compared against the corridors from the specification document.
This validation work has been carried out in MPP versions of LS-DYNA R11.2.2, R13.1.0, and the latest R14.1.0 to ensure performance and accuracy.
To make pre-processing easier, simplified definitions for the encrypted keywords have been included. LS-DYNA will ignore this data but Oasys PRIMER, version v11 and onwards, will read this and avoid any errors during model checking and manipulation.
