History
Almost a half century of software development and we’ve certainly achieved a lot. We’ve been involved in some of the most iconic projects our world has ever seen, but as the industry moves forward, so do we.
The name Oasys is derived from Ove Arup Systems and harks back to our early years when abbreviations weren’t just popular, but were necessary. It wasn’t just financial systems that truncated things, remember the millennium double digit date bug? Operating systems and development languages at the time put limitations on filenames and product names too, some of which persist to this day and are evident in our timeline when you read on.
The timeline illustrates our long history of creating software tools, which started with programmable calculators in the 1970’s before expanding into mainframes, PCs running DOS, Unix and Windows. Over time the tools have been adapted and expanded to meet the needs of different countries and disciplines.
Whether it’s general improvements to provide better user experiences, optimisation and faster processing, or developing specialist tools, we are continually improving our software and enabling you to take it further still via our expanding library of programming interfaces.
Much of our software relies on the foundations of sound research so we make significant investments each year in research projects with universities around the world to ensure that our tools continue to break new ground. We also support students and academic staff via our UNIPAC scheme, which is featured towards the end of our brochure.
Our tools can play a pivotal role in enabling customers to deliver some fantastic projects, some of which we have been able to showcase in our 40th anniversary timeline. Sadly, there was only space to feature a small fraction of them but we hope you find them as inspiring and exciting as we find.
